Empty Container - Reuse or Recycle

Some empty containers that previously held hazardous material are recyclable while others require disposal as hazardous waste.

Empty Container Management

To maximize the number of containers that can be recycled and ensure that hazardous waste containers are not improperly disposed of, all empty containers are managed by Waste Management.

The only exception to this rule is empty office supply products, which can go into the regular trash.

Sorting Empty Containers

Waste Management sorts empty containers into three categories:

  • To be reused
  • To be recycled
  • To be disposed as hazardous waste

Metal containers that can be recycled are first crushed in a machine specifically designed for the task. Crushed drums are then sent to the SLAC Salvage Department.
