Metallography
Bulk materials qualification and analysis is done by metallography. The sample is sawn, ground, polished and chemically etched to reveal the micro-structure of a part, a weld or a stressed area, for example. Examination includes optical photo-microscopy of the prepared surface to reveal damage, structure, presence of foreign inclusions, etc. The piece might be measured for micro-hardness as well.
