Supporting Internet Services at SLAC

 
Web
  • Support and maintain central production, development and test servers
  • Address Web server security issues, CGI support, access authorization
  • Test new Web technologies
  • Participate in Web-related committees and conferences
  • Provide SLAC user education resources

 

E-mail and Messaging
  • Provide reliable e-mail and calendaring infrastructure
  • Support and maintain central production, development and test Unix and Exchange e-mail servers
  • Maintain virus scanning and spam tag/quarantine services
  • Provide Instant Messaging server
  • Test new e-mail technologies

 

Videoconferencing
  • Provide video and voice conferencing, systems and services
  • Setting up and connecting the users
  • Maintenance and upgrades of the systems and the interfacing equipment
  • Work with ESNET, AT&T, SBC and VRVS for trouble-shooting and upgrades
  • Schedule audio and video conferencing services
  • Maintain conferencing documentation including web pages
  • Develop and test desktop conferencing

 

Web Video
  • Shoot video of SCS meetings
  • Maintain video Web pages
  • Digitize source audio and video from BaBar Collaborations and SLAC events
  • Edit and compress audio and video for Web distribution
  • Maintain Web video server
Computer Education
  • Provide Computer Education Support, including surveying the SLAC user community to find users needs
  • Evaluate, plan and coordinate with vendors and on-site instructors to schedule classes
  • Advertise classes via the Web and e-mail
  • Maintain Outlook classroom calendar

 

New Technologies
TAG is involved in the evaluation of new application services that have the potential of contributing to the efficiency of laboratory-wide computing and communication. These evaluations typically involve working with numerous SLAC groups, other national laboratories, and outside agencies. Technologies being investigated include:
  • Web application services
  • Internet searching tools and techniques
  • Information architecture
  • Content management systems
  • Wireless services
  • Support of handheld devices
  • Desktop videoconferencing
  • Anti-SPAM technologies
  • Web site usability evaluation
