Subject: magnetic measurements for FFTB/SPPS dumpline quads Two large-bore quadrupoles will be installed in the FFTB beam line just upstream of the dump. The magnetic measurements of theses two magnets should: 1. confirm their nominal operation and polarity 2. check that they remain adequately cooled over a reasonable period of time when operating at their nominal current 3. provide integral G.dL data vs I that can be later fitted to a polynomial. No harmonic analysis is necessary. 4. no standardize or ramp time are specified for the magnet The nominal operating current will be 91 Amps at 9.8 Volts. The integrated field per magnet we are expecting at this current is 35 kG. 5. The installed 5 kW power supply will be able in principal to provide approximately 1.5 times this current, therefore some attempt shoud be made to determine the maximum (saturated) gradient of the quadrupole up to a maximum of 150 A without, of course, risking any damage to the magnet. 6. There is a radiation safety concern as to what the maximum possible dipole field of these magnets could be under a fault condition. We therefore request that you short out one quadrant of the magnet and measure the integral dipole field at its maximum operating current. Thanks, Patrick.
