Remote Access to SLAC & Stanford Resources - VPN Configuration
VPN ConfigurationIn the advanced TCP/IP Settings of the networking panel of the VPN properties panel, check the "Use default gateway on remote network". (See below for detailed instructions)This will send web traffic through the PPTP connection to external sources. This is necessary for the external journal web pages to "see" your request as coming from SLAC, and give you the appropriate access. Note, however, that SCS explicitly recommends leaving this box unchecked for other reasons. Leaving this box unchecked means that only traffic to SLAC is routed through the SLAC VPN connection. Traffic to journals would go through your existing internet connection (which is presumably not on the SLAC network) and would thus not receive access to journals and other external, IP restricted resources. For windows XP users, the following steps will get you to the correct setting. If you use another OS, you will need to find the setting that causes all http connections to go through the VPN connection, this may or may not be the default behavior. Select the Network Connections Control Panel, and right click on your VPN connection:
Select Properties, then select the "Networking" tab:
Select "Internet Protocol" and click on "Properties"
Select Advanced, and check the box "Use default gateway on remote network"
This will allow you to access SLAC journals and other external resources that require a SLAC IP address. SCCS recommends unchecking this box for other reasons, so if you are experiencing other connectivity problems, you may want to uncheck the box after using the journals. |
