FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: WEBSITE
Q. What do I need to know before I start using the SLAC web?
Q. What do I need to know before I start writing web pages on the SLAC web?
Q. How do I get permission to author on an existing web site?
A. The quickest way to get “write permission” is to send the URL of the website to www-admin@slac.stanford.edu for Windows or unix-admin@slac.stanford.edu for Unix.  Someone monitoring these lists will get back to you with details. For more information about write permisions see Getting Write Permission.
Q. Can I have a home page at SLAC?
A. Yes, but the individual web space is intended for work-related use. See Individual Web Space for details.
Q. Who can help me with a web coding problem?
A. Your first contact should be your Department/Division web contact list. If your group is not listed or the listed web contact is no longer at SLAC, then contact www-admin@slac.stanford.edu and someone monitoring the list will help.
Q. Where do I report a problem with a web page?
A. First, look for an owner or contact name on the page (usually at the bottom). If there is no contact listed, then send email to www-admin@slac.stanford.edu with as much detail as possible, including the URL you are accessing, what web browser you are using, and details about the problem you are experiencing.
Q. How do I restrict access to my web pages?
Q. What kind of scripting is allowed on our web servers?
A. For reasons of security and support, use of server-side scripting languages on our web services are limited to CGI scripting on Unix and ASP and ASP.NET scripting on Windows. For more information see Running Scripts at SLAC.
Q. What is a FrontPage subweb?
A. On our Windows servers we can set up "subwebs", which are essentially subdirectories that can have separate authoring permission than the parent web. A subweb is useful when you want different people writing to different areas on your website. However, there are some disadvantages especially if you use any of the site management tools built into FrontPage. If you are considering a subweb, please send your request to www-admin@slac.stanford.edu.
Q. Where can I get more information or help with web issues?
A. Check out SLAC Web Policy and Resources . If you have a good resource you'd like to share, send it to us.
