SLAC Self-Paced Expressions Web 4.0 Tutorial
The goal of this tutorial is to help SLAC web authors gain a basic understanding of how to access and manipulate authorized SLAC websites using Expression Web 4.0. This tutorial includes instructions for loading and accessing the standard SLAC website template on your user space, and self-paced exercises. As it is assumed you have basic HTML knowledge, these exercises focus on using Expression Web 4.0 to work with text, images, and the left navigation bar within that site.
Prerequisites
In order to utilize this tutorial effectively, the following is required.
- Knowledge of and experience with basic HTML editing
- Understanding of Windows navigation
- A Web folder on the SLAC User web server (www-user.slac.stanford.edu/username)
- Expression Web 4.0 installed on your PC
- WinZip or WinRAR extraction software to open archived template files
- The SLAC web templates used in these exercises loaded on User space (www-user)

Download Tutorial Files to Your Computer
1. Download the zipped folder that contains the SLAC Expression Web Tutorial Files
2. From your system’s default extraction tool (e.g., WinZip, WinRAR, etc.) copy the ExpressionWebTraining folder to your desktop.
Loading the Tutorial Site to Your User Space
1. From the Window’s Start menu select Program > Microsoft Expression > Microsoft Expression Web 4. The Untitled_1.html document window appears.
2. Select Site > Open Site. The Open Site dialog box appears.
3. In Location, enter the following URL replacing userid with your username (e.g., smith)
http://www-user.slac.stanford.edu/USERID/
and press Open. The Remote Site Editing Options window appears.
4. Select Edit Live Site Now and press OK.
5. Select File > Import > File… The Import window appears.
6. Select Add Folder… The File Open window appears.
7. Navigate to and single-click on the ExpressionsWebTraining folder you downloaded and press Open. The Import window displays a list of the files and filepaths to the ExpressionWebTraining folder you selected.
8. Press OK. The ExpressionWebTraining folder appears in the Folder List pane view on the left-hand navigation of the Expression Web window.
9. Double-click the ExpressionWebTraining folder. The Contents of ‘ExpressionWebTraining’ appears in the Site View panel.
