Certificate in Supervision Program

WHAT IS THE CERTIFICATE IN SUPERVISION PROGRAM?

A nine-class training program designed to teach supervisors and managers effective leadership and
supervisory skills to meet the demands of SLAC’s workplace and promote optimal performance from employees.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

  • All new supervisors
    Classes marked with an asterisk below are required for all supervisors who have moved from the ranks of individual contributors, have never supervised employees before at SLAC and have been
    in supervision for two years or less.
  • Experienced supervisors who want to improve their management skills
  • Other SLAC employees who want to learn about the supervisory role
  • Employees on a fast track to management roles.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS FOR PARTICIPANTS?

Participants will:
  • Achieve a basic practical understanding of the role of a supervisor
  • Gain new skills to develop optimum performance from employees
  • Improve personal potential for promotions and salary increases
  • Learn from knowledgeable professionals;
  • Meet with others who face similar challenges in supervision.

HOW IS A CERTIFICATE IN SUPERVISION EARNED?

  • Participants must attend all nine classes.  Supervisors approval is required to attend the program.
  • If a participant misses one or more classes in the first series offered, the participant may make up the class in future series.
  • Participants will have two years to complete the training series in order to earn the Certificate.
    In special instances, employees may have up to three years to complete the program.  Approval required.
At the completion of the classes, participants will:
  • Earn a Certificate in Supervision, to be included in their personnel files
  • Receive an invitation to the certificate awards luncheon with the Director of SLAC usually held
    in September.

HOW DO YOU REGISTER FOR THE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM?

Please mail the completed form to Employee Relations, MS 11. (Classes also may be taken individually outside of the Certificate program).

Supervisory approval is required for participation in the program.

CLASS SCHEDULE:

All classes are held in the Redwood Conference Room, ROB Building (48) on the schedule outlined below.

1. *An Introduction to Supervision/Leadership at SLAC (6 hours)

Tuesday, October 16, 2007; 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

This introductory course will teach participants how to shift from worker to supervisor, establish credibility and authority, communicate with staff, understand work styles and avoid common errors in supervision. The course will also include an overview of “nuts and bolts” issues specific to SLAC, such as administering policies and procedures, and developing a sound work environment.

2. *Understanding Legal Issues in Supervision (4 hours)

Thursday, November 15, 2007; 8:00 a.m. to noon

This interactive session is designed to raise participants’ awareness of legal issues that arise in the context of supervision and the individual liability supervisors may have in dealing with these issues. Participants will learn the basics of non-harassment, discrimination, leave, disability, and other employment laws. Participants will learn what to do when confronted with employee behaviors that violate these laws and how to prevent unlawful activities in the workplace.

3. *Establishing Performance Expectations (4 hours)

Thursday, January 10, 2008; 8:00 a.m. to noon

This session is designed to increase participants’ effectiveness in establishing individual expectations for performance and standards for appropriate conduct in a respectful workplace. Participants’ will learn step-by-step processes to create more efficiency in the workplace and to give employees the fullest opportunity to succeed in their jobs.

4. Counseling and Coaching High Performance Employees (4 hours)

Thursday, February 28, 2008; 8:00 a.m. to noon

This session will concentrate on defining coaching, coaching opportunities, using coaching to develop and motivate employees, giving developmental feedback and developing an effective process to coach employees. Participants will also learn the reasons employees fail to be high performers, and how to apply techniques to achieve high performance.

5. *Managing & Assessing Winning Performance (4 hours)

Thursday, March 13, 2008; 8:00 a.m. to noon

This session will help participants increase their effectiveness in one of the most essential tools for a supervisor to use in ensuring high performance from employees: assessing performance and giving feedback.  Participants will learn how to write effective performance reviews, set SMART goals to communicate effectively about performance.

6.  Managing Employees’ Workplace Problems (4 hours)

Thursday, April 24, 2008; 8:00 a.m. to noon

This session is designed to increase participants’ effectiveness in identifying and analyzing problems, communicating with employees about problems and responding to employees’ problems that affect their work. The class will identify the supervisor’s role in addressing problems and dealing with conflict in the workplace.

7.  *Creating A Safe & Sound Work Environment (4 hours)

Thursday, May 15, 2008; 8:00 a.m. to noon

This session will empower supervisors with skills to effectively manage their Environmental Safety and Health (ES&H) roles and create healthy and sound work environments in their workplace. Using interactive scenarios and building on the principles of sound supervision and core ES&H functions, participants will engage in challenging exercises designed for real-life application in the field. Topics include: identifying ES&H supervisory responsibilities, ISMS, AHA’s, JHAM’s, STA’s, authorizing work tasks, controlling hazards in the work environment, Workers' Compensation and accessing ES&H resources.

8. Project Management and Delegation (4 hours)

Thursday, June 12, 2008; 8:00 a.m. to noon

This session explores project management as a crucial supervisory tool that includes not only delegating work, but also sharing responsibility with employees, allocating sufficient authority for employees to accomplish work, and holding employees accountable for their work. Participants will come away with a step by step process to implement in their own projects. Participants will learn project management through hands-on practical exercises.

9. Building Effective Teams (4 hours)

Thursday, July 17, 2008; 8:00 a.m. to noon

This session will teach supervisors how to strengthen the performance of existing teams and build high performing new teams. Participants will learn when to use teams, how to foster open communications within a team, and how to take best advantage of strengths each member brings to a team.
