Layoff Information
This website is a resource to keep all lab staff posted on the processes and policies surrounding the layoffs, as announced by Director Persis Drell on January 7, 2008. This site is continually updated as new information becomes available. The involuntary layoff program requires that approximately 150 staff to leave the lab; these staff members have been notified. The effective date of the involuntary layoffs will be during the first part of April. Any employees with additional questions are urged to contact Carmella Huser at
x2358 or Barry Webb at x2355. Upcoming Event Retirement Workshop (for Non-Bargainning Unit SLAC Employees) The DBM Retirement workshop March 25 and 27 will be held from 9:00am to 3:30pm both days. The emphasis will be on a "New Definition" of retirement (not your father's retirement), i.e., a new freedom fostering life enrichment, self management, self reliance, wellness, and a rewarding life style as you create a new career realizing that this process occurs differently for each individual. The workshop if highly participative and space is limited, so please call us to reserve your seat. 1.800.980.8090. Please note: attending the workshop will start your DBM services.
Processes and Q&A Decisions to determine who will be laid off were made in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, #318 through #328, and Administrative Guide Memo 22.16. More information about the layoffs is available from Human Resource's Voluntary Layoff Questions and Answers and the Involuntary Layoff Questions and Answers memos. In addition, a constantly updated list of Recent Layoff Questions and Answers follows. 1. During the time of Paid Administrative Leave (PAL), will employees receive
their normal benefits? 2. If a person was notified of his or her layoff and goes on Paid Administrative Leave (PAL), what happens if the person takes a new job outside of Stanford or SLAC during the PAL period?
3. How should laid off employees go about seeking
jobs on campus? The link
to the Stanford campus jobs is:
http://jobs.stanford.edu/.
When SLAC employees apply to positions there, they
should send email to
employment@slac.stanford.edu to let us know they
have applied and reference a job requisition number or
numbers. We have a contact in central employment who
will provide us with the hiring manager's email address
and we will send email to verify layoff status and
remind the hiring manager of the layoff preference. (Q&A last updated February 20, 2008)
Resources This is a difficult time for everyone at the lab. The Stanford Faculty and Staff Help Center serves all employees and may be helpful in this time of change. The firm DBM (Drake Beam Morin, Inc.) has been retained by the University to assist laid off employees with the career transition process. In addition, Peninsula Works will provide these services to bargaining unit employees. DBM is offering additional workshops off-site. Please refer to the Transition Event Calendar (Word, PDF) for location, dates and times of the workshops. To help you with your job search, we've provided a list of companies (Word, PDF) that are hiring. This list is still in progress and we encourage you to check back to see if new company names have been added.
