Alonzo W. Ashley Fellowship

THE INSPIRATION

The Alonzo W. Ashley Fellowship was created in honor of Al Ashley, who retired from SLAC after 30 years of dedicated and exemplary services, particularly in the area of diversity in the sciences and engineering.  During this tenure at SLAC, Al pioneered programs that promoted diversity and encouraged career development for employees and career exploration for talented students.  Al served as a mentor to hundreds of emerging scientists during their journey through the scientific field.

The Ashley Fellowship is designed to continue Al's work to diversity the work force in the fields of science and in engineering.  It also is designed to support, mentor, and encourage individuals who want to contribute to the scientific mission at SLAC, but, absent a dedicated career opportunity, may not be able to do so.  A successful candidate for the Ashley Fellowship is one who can align his/her career objectives to the current scientific effort at SLAC and is committed to promoting and exemplifying the importance of diversity in the field of science and engineering.

DESCRIPTION OF THE FELLOWSHIP

The Fellowship is a one-year job rotation and on-the-job training opportunity accompanied by time off to attend related coursework.  Activities and job assignments are
tailored to coincide with current scientific efforts within SLAC with regular salary and

For existing employees, job rotation or reassignments within SLAC must have the support
of the current and receiving department.

For outside candidates, an internship-like position will be created to meet operational needs
and scientific mission objectives.  Preference is given to in-house candidates in a tie-breaking
situation.

For managers, the Fellowship is an internship position financially sponsored by the Fellowship
to meet existing scientific mission program or objectives.  Managers must be committed to
acting as a mentor or intern and for promoting diversity efforts outside and within SLAC.
