Why give blood?  Check out our daily inventory http://bloodcenter.stanford.edu/news/inventory.html

You give a precious gift when you give blood because blood cannot be manufactured. When people think of the need for blood they think of emergencies. People who suffer from cancer, heart disease, hemophilia, leukemia and other major illnesses need blood on a regular basis to survive. Approximately 4 million people need blood each year - that is one patient every 12 seconds.

As you may know, a pint of blood can be separated into three components: plasma, platelets and red cells. This means that each unit donated is able to benefit up to three different patients. Since 1989, donations by the SLAC community have helped more than 10,186 patients (through September 2001 drive). Please donate - it does make a difference.

What is the Procedure?

Giving blood could save a life - perhaps your own! Donors undergo a free mini-physical to detect potential health risks. Fortunately, the Stanford Blood Center comes to SLAC four times a year. This team of able nurses, with the help of Blood Center volunteers, check for anemia, and take your body temperature, pulse and blood pressure. Cholesterol screening is included in the mini-physical and results are mailed to donors approximately three weeks after the blood drive. For medical or eligibility questions, please call the Stanford Blood Center at 650/725-9968.
