Mail Services:

To send interoffice (interdepartmental) or outgoing mail, you may take it to the Mail Room, your department mail stop, or the mail stop out-basket near the lobby of the A&E Building (next to the stairs). Single-day mailings exceeding $400 require an account number.

  • Interdepartmental (ID) Mail: SLAC internal and Stanford University mail only. Use an interoffice mail envelope with the name and mail stop of the receiver. (Stanford University mail should have the word "Campus" on the envelope.)
  • Priority Mail: Two-day delivery, domestic mail only.
  • Postal Express Mail (account number needed): Next-day delivery to major domestic cities. Also serves most foreign countries. Dispatched from the Mail Room at 10:30 AM and 4:30 PM Monday through Friday.
  • First Class International Mail: Sent by EXPO (provides courier services to the country of destination, then injects mail into the local system). Less expensive with better delivery time than Postal Express for international mail. Dispatched from the Mail Room at 5:00 PM Monday through Friday.
  • FedEx and UPS Packages (account number needed): These are handled by SLAC Shipping and Receiving, not SLAC Mail Services. Mail Services will provide Emergency FedEx Customer Service, but it may have to be sanctioned by the Facilities Manager. If you are planning to drop your package off at the Mail Services to be delivered to SLAC Shipping and Receiving, the package must be dropped off before noon. For more information regarding FedEx shipping, please contact Shipping and Receiving or see FedEx form.
  • Certified Mail: Should be taken directly to a post office branch. SLAC does not provide Certified Mail services.

Receiving Personal Mail at Work:

When does federal protection of mail terminate?
Mail received into the hands of the addressee or the addressee's agent is considered properly delivered mail. Mail addressed to employees or officials of an organization at the organization's address is considered properly delivered after it has been received at the organization. For this reason, the Postal Inspection Service discourages individuals from using their employer's address for receipt of personal mail.
