"Permanent Magnet Radiation Damage: Thoughts on Focus of Future Measurements"
Building 24, Room 126, ES&H Conference room, 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Abstract:
Synchrotron and FEL facilities rely on insertion devices to produce intense x-ray beams. These insertion devices consist of periodic arrays of permanent magnets with identical magnetic field strengths. Variations in field strength of a percent or more cannot be tolerated. This has been an area of concern for current kW-scale FEL facilities (LCLS-I/II, XFEL/RIKEN) and represents a challenge for MW-scale facilities (XFEL/DESY, NGLS). Radiation-induced damage of permanent magnets has been known for 30+ years, yet the underlying damage mechanisms are not well understood. Most of the published experimental work on radiation damage seeks to correlate bulk magnet damage with absorbed dose, particle fluence, star density, etc., yet few works describe in any detail the microstructure of the irradiated magnets. This talk discusses possible shortcomings of published damage measurements and provides some suggestions for future measurements in order to gain a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract:
The understanding of the radiation environment of an high energy physics accelerator and its experiments is as necessary as it is challenging.

Taking the example of both the Tevatron and CDF at Fermilab and the LHC and ATLAS at CERN, the variety of the sources that contribute to the radiation levels is such that simply relying on measurements when they are available is not enough for a complete characterization. Furthermore, the problems are too complex to be treated analytically.

Computer simulations with the MARS and FLUKA Monte Carlo codes are necessary because they are often the only information of what the dose to the machine elements, detector parts and personnel will be beforehand, all important points that help to design new machines or to assess the impact of modifications. They are challenging also, because the determination of the radiation levels in research centers of such large dimensions and that push the energy frontier often calls for the development of novel techniques. Examples will be presented to illustrate the use of these codes to create models that can predict particle fluxes, energy deposited and induced radioactivity for various applications at Fermilab and CERN, and their benchmark with data when it was possible.
