Ergonomics Presentations 2015

September 3 : Ergonomics - What's in Your Workplace?

Ergonomics at its core is about fitting the job to the worker and not the other way around. Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) historically places a large emphasis on risk reduction and injury prevention, but quite often it is the simplicity of understanding and applying ergonomics that is missing. If a worker understands the exposures presented in the workplace, they are usually equipped to help professionals with understanding the best and often inexpensive solutions.

This presentation by David M. Zalk, Ph.D. and Certified Industrial Hygienist from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, seeks to do just that. David has many years of experience supporting ergonomic enhancements in research and industrial environments. You will be presented with simplified methods to understand the most common ergonomic risk factors in everyday life and offered basic solutions to begin the process of prevention. These basics are designed to help SLAC staff better understand musculoskeletal health in an approachable manner.

August 31 : Ergonomic Case Studies

When most people hear the term 'ergonomics' they think of their computer workstation. Many don’t connect the term to improvements outside of the office in laboratory, maintenance or other settings. Many companies and institutions have achieved remarkable results by deploying human factors and ergonomics principles to make work ‘user friendly’ as well as reduce the risk of injury or fatigue.

Ira Janowitz, formerly the ergonomics program manager at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, used case studies relevant to our work at SLAC to demonstrate insightful and practical process and task improvements. Many of these have led to greater efficiency, happier employees and a reduction in ergonomic risk factors. Ira is a frequent guest lecturer on the topics of occupational biomechanics and ergonomics. His presentation provided insights that can improve your current work conditions or processes. Representatives from SLAC’s ergonomics program and Occupational Health Center were also be in attendance to answer any SLAC-specific questions.

July 21: Ergonomic Posture Presentation

Ergonomic injuries remain the most frequent injury occurrence at SLAC, and the most frequently affected body part is – you guessed it – the back.  Jean Couch, founder of the Balance Center in Palo Alto, came to SLAC to discuss practical ways to help reduce or eliminate pain in the back and neck.

Her presentation instructs you on ways to be in “balance” and achieve comfortable posture, including concrete guidelines on how to sit comfortably.  Jean studies healthy populations from all over the world, including people who remain active into their old age, those who don't experience back pain and don’t end up with hunched-over posture. Dr. Rich Wittman and Matt DeAngelis from SLAC's Occupational Health Center were also in attendance to answer any SLAC-specific questions.
