SLAC Wellness Classes

See the class details for information on how to register. Most classes are taught and registered through Stanford HIP. You can join the classes at any time during the quarter.  For a full list and description of HIP classes including those at Stanford, please see the current schedules for Group Fitness Classes [pdf] and Healthy Living Classes [pdf].  To find SLAC HIP classes in the registration, go to the HIP search page, select 'fitness classes', ignore subcategory and instructor, then select 'SLAC' and submit. Spring Schedule, April 2 - June 15, 2012

Building 27 (Aerobic Studio) Regular Classes 

These are the HIP classes held at SLAC in Building 27.  Building 27 is on the Loop Road between ES&H Bld 24 and Light Fabrication Bld 25 (roughly diagonally across the street from the Fire Station).

Healthy Living Classes

None at SLAC this quarter, however there are web-based ones, and the classes at Stanford are just a Shuttle Ride away!

Regular Class Details

Cardio Dance & Core Strength Fusion
(Zumba Fitness)

Instructor(s): Nicole Wargo, Brett Blankenship, Monica Mark

  12:00-1:00pm, Monday/Wednesday
  5:15-6:15pm, Tuesday/Thursday

Enjoy the low to moderate intensity activity with steps and styles from various genres of dance. Move to folk, cha cha, waltz, western, swing, merenge, afro, samba, and Middle Eastern dance! Get a great full-body workout! Wear athletic shoes or dance shoes and comfortable clothing. Bring a mat or towel, and a water bottle.

Cross Training

This class includes a thorough warm-up, 30-35 minutes of fun activities including interval training, muscle conditioning exercises and stretching. For people of all levels, including beginners and those wanting to get back in shape! Bring a mat or towel and water bottle.

Healthy Back Strong Core (w/Cardio)

Instructor: Kerry Spear, Sue Skulina

This class benefits everyone - not just people with back problems!  Emphasis is on exercises for the back, and maintaining good posture while doing core strengthening exercises on the stability ball.  Everyone exercises at his or her own fitness level.  Bring a mat, towel, and water bottle..

Pilate Essentials

Instructors: Kerry Spear (M), HIP Staff (W)

  5:15-6:15 pm, Mondays
  5:30-6:30 pm, Wednesdays

Pilates classes address posture, mind/body awareness, strength, and flexibility training. Emphasis is placed on deep breathing and strengthening the abdominal, shoulder stabilizer, pelvic floor, and back muscles, and on improving mobility. All levels welcome, including those with back problems. Bring a mat, towel, and a water bottle.

Chen Family Taijiquan (Tai Chi) & Qigong

Instructor: Master Wong
Registration: Stanford HIP

Chen Style Taijiquan (Tai Chi) includes low powerful stances, body coiling movements, stomping, and an explosive release of power, as well as graceful, slow, and light movements. During this class, the instructor will discuss the benefits of Taijiquan and Qigong, including: improved health, muscle strength and balance, and reduced stress. Wear comfortable clothing. Classes are held outdoors in a covered area. Class held rain or shine. Master Wong is a 20th generation, 1st Grade, Gold Medalist Tai Chi Master.

Yoga:  Hatha Yoga with a Touch of Anusara

Take a mid-day break to relax and renew your body and mind. The class combines feel-good stretches, breathing exercises, and guided relaxation to undo morning stress and refresh you. Bring a yoga mat.
