Requirements:
General
The required elements of an ECP comprise the general requirements of this chapter:
- Determination of employee exposure
- Implementation of various methods of exposure control, including
- Universal precautions
- Engineering and work practice controls
- Personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Housekeeping
- Hepatitis B vaccination
- Post-exposure evaluation and follow-up
- Communication of hazards to employees and training
- Record keeping
- Procedures for evaluating circumstances surrounding exposure incidents
Implementation methods for these elements are discussed in sections
Procedures and Specific Requirements and
Training. Three more detailed requirements apply generally:
- All at-risk employees will utilize universal precautions: all human blood and OPIM will be treated as if known to be infectious for HIV, HBV, HCV, and other blood-borne pathogens.
- The Hepatitis B Vaccination Acceptance/ Declination form (see
Forms & Tools) must be filled out by at-risk employees.
- All needle sticks must be reported, regardless of severity.
