Overview Requirements Standards Definitions    

Requirements:
General

The required elements of an ECP comprise the general requirements of this chapter:

  • Determination of employee exposure
  • Implementation of various methods of exposure control, including
    • Universal precautions
    • Engineering and work practice controls
    • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
    • Housekeeping
  • Hepatitis B vaccination
  • Post-exposure evaluation and follow-up
  • Communication of hazards to employees and training
  • Record keeping
  • Procedures for evaluating circumstances surrounding exposure incidents

Implementation methods for these elements are discussed in sections Procedures and Specific Requirements and Training. Three more detailed requirements apply generally:

  1. All at-risk employees will utilize universal precautions: all human blood and OPIM will be treated as if known to be infectious for HIV, HBV, HCV, and other blood-borne pathogens.
  2. The Hepatitis B Vaccination Acceptance/ Declination form (see Forms & Tools) must be filled out by at-risk employees.
  3. All needle sticks must be reported, regardless of severity.
