Definitions (Section 4)

Accessible emission limit (AEL). The maximum accessible emission level permitted within a particular class

Class 1 laser. Class 1 lasers are incapable of producing damaging radiation levels and are therefore exempt from any control measures

Class 2 laser. Class 2 lasers emit accessible, visible radiation at levels at which damage from direct chronic exposure is possible. These lasers will have a caution label affixed to the external surface of the device.

Class 3 laser. Class 3 lasers (subdivided into Class 3a and Class 3b) may cause biological damage to human tissue as a result of concentrated, acute exposure

Class 4 laser. Class 4 lasers may cause damage to the eye and skin with direct or diffuse (concentrated or reflected) exposures to the beam

Deputy laser safety officer (DLSO). See "laser safety officer, deputy"

Laser. A device that produces a coherent, intense, highly directional beam of light of a single wavelength or tunable over a band of wavelengths

Laser safety officer (LSO). An individual designated by the laboratory director having the authority and responsibility to monitor and enforce the control of laser hazards and to effect the knowledgeable evaluation and control of laser hazards

Laser safety officer, deputy (DLSO). The deputy laser safety officer is designated by the laser safety officer (LSO) and performs LSO functions when the LSO is not available

Laser safety officer, system(s) (SLSO). An individual designated by the program manager to be responsible for a laser or system of lasers and for the preparation and enforcement of a safety plan, including standard operating procedures for the safe operation of said lasers

Maximum permissible exposure (MPE). The level of laser radiation to which a person may be exposed without hazardous effect or adverse biological changes in the eye or skin

Nominal hazard zone (NHZ). An area where laser radiation exceeds the maximum permissible exposure (MPE)

Program manager. A SLAC division director, assistant division director, department head, or manager of a science or support program within one of the SLAC directorates or the laboratory director's office

SLAC Training Assessment (STA). A tool used for identifying specific, appropriate training for an individual employee to address job skill requirements or to address hazards (and their mitigation) that the employee may encounter in the performance of the work

Standard operating procedure (SOP). Formal written description of the safety systems (including engineering controls) and administrative procedures to be followed during the operation of a system(s) of lasers

System(s) laser safety officer (SLSO). See "laser safety officer, system(s)
