Ladder Safety Procedure

Pre-use Ladder Inspections

Step Person Action
1 User Inspects the ladder for overall condition prior to use
2 User

Inspects the following types of ladders for deficiencies that represent conditions requiring a ladder to be removed from service until corrected.

Step Ladders

  • Oil, grease, or excess dirt
  • Noticeably loose steps, rungs, and hardware or ladder instability
  • Corroded metal parts or sharp edges
  • Missing or damaged truss block supports, reinforcing rods, or knee braces
  • Damaged or defective safety or non-skid feet, where provided
  • Major delaminations, blisters, or visible cracks and splits in rungs or side rails
  • Damaged or non-functioning spreader or locking device

Extension Ladders

  • Oil, grease, or excess dirt
  • Noticeably loose steps, rungs, and hardware or ladder instability
  • Corroded metal parts or sharp edges
  • Major delaminations, blisters, or visible cracks and splits in rungs or side rails
  • Damaged or defective pulleys, rung locks, or rope
  • Damaged or defective safety feet

Ladder Stands

  • Oil, grease, or excess dirt
  • Noticeable loose steps, rungs, and hardware or ladder instability
  • Corroded metal parts or sharp edges
  • Cracks in welds
  • Casters in poor condition or missing
  • Damaged or missing safety feet

Fixed Ladders

  • No CGS inspection label attached
  • Reject tag and "do not use" sign is attached
  • Oil, grease, or excess dirt
  • Damaged/defective steps, rungs, side rails, or cage structure
  • Corroded metal parts or sharp edges
3 User

If a ladder is determined to have any deficiencies (listed in Step 2), attaches a "do not use" sign and notifies the manager/supervisor and/or the building/area manager.

Note: the user exercises the degree of control necessary to prohibit use of a ladder, once identified as defective.

4 Manager/supervisor or ladder owner For a deficient portable ladder, the manager/supervisor ensures the ladder is removed from service or tagged or marked as out of service and immediately contacts CGS. For a fixed ladder, the owner attaches reject tag and "do not use" sign, contacts CGS
