Oil and Oil Filters

Waste Oil

Used oil is a hazardous waste and must be managed appropriately. Most waste oil is sent off-site for recycling, therefore do not mix other chemicals with used oil.

Collect your used oil in a properly labeled hazardous waste container.

Oil Filters

Most used oil filters can be drained and recycled off-site.

Nearly all of the site's used oil filters are generated by the  SLAC Transportation Department (which services most SLAC motor vehicles and heavy equipment) and the Hoisting and Rigging Group. The site also has other sources of oil filters including small pumps and generators.

Managing a Used Oil Filter

Use the following steps to manage a used oil filter:

  1. Drain as much oil as possible from the filter.
  2. Collect the drained oil and place it is a properly labeled waste collection container.
  3. Place the drained filter in a plastic bag. Label the exterior of the plastic bag "Drained used oil filter"
  4. Contact the Hazardous Waste and Material Coordinator at the SLAC Transportation Department to arrange for handling of the used filter. SLAC Transportation has a crusher to prepare the used oil filter for off-site recycling.
  5. Request removal of the waste oil collection container.
