Cathode Ray Tubes
Cathode ray tubes (CRTs) are used in television sets,
computers and scientific equipment. Lead (Pb) in the
form of lead oxide is added to the CRT glass to shield
the user from x-rays.
A typical seventeen-inch computer
monitor contains over two pounds of lead. Larger CRTs
may each contain up to 10 pounds of lead. Lead can be
toxic and is regulated as a hazardous waste.
Disposal
CRTs are collected by the Salvage Department. Complete
a Material
Request Transfer Form (Salvage Form) before transferring
any material to Salvage. The Salvage Department determines
which CRTs are not longer usable, and transfers them
to Waste Management for proper disposal.
Broken CRT
If you break a CRT device, manage the broken glass as
a hazardous waste spill.
