 SLAC Recycling Program

Recycling Carts:  Paper, Bottles and Cans

A major feature of the SLAC Recycling Program are our "green" recycling carts you see around the buildings for collecting paper and bottles and cans. The carts are typically green, 32 or 64 gallons in size, plastic, and equipped with wheels and lids. The carts are labeled to help explain which materials can be deposited for recycling.

If you have any questions about the permanent locations, or would like to obtain new carts for your area, please contact your Building Manager. If using a cart in a temporary location, please return it to its original location so it will be properly managed by the janitors and recycling subcontractors. Keep the lids closed for outdoor recycling carts.

The success of the program depends on us.  All people at SLAC are encouraged to use the recycling carts, placing bottles and cans or paper in the appropriate carts.  Additionally, paper can be collected in smaller cardboard desktop boxes in work area (next to computers, for example) and brought to the larger carts when full. Requests for desktop boxes can be directed to the Waste Minimization Coordinator.

The recycling program involves a combination of janitorial and recycling subcontractor services. In buildings that have recycling carts located indoors, janitors move carts from indoor to outdoor locations on an as-needed basis (when the cart is nearly full). The janitors bring back an extra empty cart from the assigned outdoor location. Note: The janitors only move carts on level ground or mildly sloped ground, not up or down stairways or other sharp changes in surface. The recycling subcontractor will only empty recycling carts from assigned outdoor locations. The subcontractor will collect from these locations once per week, usually Tuesdays. The carts are mechanically emptied into a compartmentalized truck that keeps recyclable materials segregated by two types: Mixed Paper and Beverage Bottles/Cans.

Please do not leave materials outside or in front of the collection carts.

Paper

Mixed PaperThe green carts are labeled to indicate which types of items are acceptable for SLAC’s recycling program. The following materials may be placed in the "mixed paper" carts:

  • White and colored paper (copier paper)
  • Newspaper and junk mail
  • Books (hard back, soft back, telephone books)
  • Paper bags
  • Paperboard (e.g., cereal box, manila folders, cardboard spools)
  • Plastic bags and bubble wrap
  • Shredded paper is recyclable. However, please collect crosscut shredded materials in a plastic bag before placing it in the bins (otherwise it makes a mess on collection).
  • Carbon-less carbon paper
  • Drawings from large size Xerox machine

Not Recyclable:

  • Blueprint and coated plotter papers must be disposed of in the trash; a recycling option is not available at this time. However, if you can identify that a plotter paper is not coated (check with paper manufacturer) it can be recycled.
  • Paper contaminated with food and oils, such as napkins, pizza boxes, and doughnut boxes are NOT acceptable for recycling and should be thrown in the trash or compost container at the SLAC Cafeteria.

Bottles and Cans

Bottles and CansThe green carts are labeled to indicate which types of items are acceptable for SLAC’s recycling program. The following materials may be placed in the "cans and bottles" carts:

  • Categories of recyclable plastics: #1 - #5 and #7 labeled plastic
    • Polystyrene (Styrofoam) packaging is not acceptable for recycling in SLAC's recycling program even if they possess a recycling symbol (see what to do with Styrofoam packaging).
    • Remove caps and empty contents as much as you can before placing cans and bottles in the recycling carts.  Plastic caps are not recyclable and should be placed in the trash; metal caps are recyclable and may be placed in the recycling cans.
  • Aseptic containers ("drink boxes" that hold primarily beverages such as milk, fruit juice and wine are recyclable. They are usually made with high quality paper, polyethylene and small percentage of aluminum.) Empty contents as much as you can.
  • Aluminum cans, tin cans, and other metal cans used for food and beverages are recyclable
  • Aluminum foil used for food (rinse first) is recyclable
  • All glass bottle and jars (any color) used for food/beverages are recyclable
