Pollution Prevention and Waste Minimization
Free Electronics Recycling Event at SLAC
October 14-16, 2008, B446, 8-10am/12-1:30pm
- Location Map [pdf]
SLAC is hosting a free recycling event for employee household electronic
waste October 14-16, 2008. Electronic waste, or “e-waste,” is the name given to
electronic products such as computers, televisions, VCRs, that have come to the
end of their useful life. According to the State of California, electronic
discards is one of the fastest growing segments of our nation’s waste stream.
Some electronics contain hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, and
cadmium, where if not properly managed, can impact the environment. For more
information on e-waste and useful resources, see "E-waste Recycling Tips,"
a previously published SLAC Today Article on the subject and management of e-waste at SLAC.
Employees can bring their household electronic waste to this special
collection event
located in the parking lot behind Building 447, the Centralized Hazardous Waste
Storage Yard, between the hours of 8-10 am and 12-1:30 pm, October 14 through
October 16. No SLAC/government property will be accepted in this event;
please coordinate reuse/recycling of SLAC/government property with Property
Control/Salvage Warehouse (ext. 2329).
If you are planning on bringing in items that you are not comfortable lifting
such as heavy or bulky items, we ask that you make an appointment for drop-off
by calling Waste Management (x2399) between October 7-10. This way we can ensure
that appropriate personnel are available to assist you in safely unloading your
item. If you have questions on the event contact Ardie Jacob (x5059) or Micki DeCamara (x2348).
Drop-off Location:
Parking lot located behind Bld. 447, the Centralized
Hazardous Waste Storage Yard. See the
location map [pdf] and follow the signs. You will
need your SLAC badge to pass through Gate 30.
Drop off hours:
October 14-16, between the hours of 8-10 am and 12-1:30 pm.
Information on the recycler:
Our selected recycler maintains a
zero-waste-to-landfill policy and Basel Action Network (BAN) compliance policy.
Requirements:
Please see the list of acceptable and unacceptable items below. Unacceptable
materials will need to return home with the employee.
The recycling vendor has indicated that they will sanitize hard drives before
resale or recycling, however, we recommend that you clear your computer hard
drives before drop off.
We require that you confirm that the materials you are dropping off are not
SLAC/government property. Your materials should not be left unattended until
collected by a recycling volunteer, nor disposed or abandoned anywhere at SLAC,
should they not be acceptable for the recycling event. Except for this type of
special event, no household waste should ever be brought into SLAC for
recycling, disposal, or abandonment.
