What's Acceptable and What's Not in Compost Bins

 

Acceptable Materials

Yes, clam shell take-out containers made of natural fiber

Yes, clam shell take-out containers made of natural fiber

Yes, clam shell take-out container marked as "PLA" or #7 “PLA"
(PLA stands for polylactic acid, derived from corn)

Yes, take out trays made of natural fiber
(non-soiled trays can also go into the mixed paper bins onsite)

Yes, plates made of natural fiber with no wax or poly coating

Yes, cups marked as "PLA" or "100% Compostable"
(PLA stands for polylactic acid, derived from corn)

Yes, utensils marked as "Tater Ware" or "World Centric"

Paper napkins

Yes, coffee sleeves
(non-soiled sleeves can also go into the mixed paper bins onsite)

Unacceptable Materials


No coffee cups or lids
(coffee cups not compostable due to poly lining)

No plastic. Containers like this one labeled #6 are not recyclable


No plastic.  #6  plastics like this are also not recyclable

No chip bags, they contain plastics.

No poly-lined paper take-out boxes such as these
(not compostable due to poly lining )
