Chapter 19: Personal Protective Equipment

Overview (1)

The proper maintenance and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) can prevent serious exposures and injuries. For this reason, personnel at SLAC must follow proper safety practices in determining whether PPE is necessary. When using PPE, personnel must ensure that their PPE meets the adopted safety standards.

Hazards/Impacts (1.1)

Work at SLAC has the potential to expose individuals to harmful substances and physical agents. Engineering controls are the preferred mitigation, followed by administrative controls. PPE is used in addition to these controls, particularly when they are considered insufficient. Improper application of PPE or inadequate PPE can lead to serious injury or death.

Scope (2)

The requirements of this chapter apply to everyone at SLAC, including employees, users, students, and subcontractors, who perform tasks requiring the use of PPE for hazard mitigation.

Specific PPE requirements are described in detail in the hazard-specific chapters of this manual.

Implementation (8)

The requirements of this chapter are effective upon publication unless otherwise noted here.
