Requirements:
Procedures and Specific Requirements (5.2)
The following procedures are required for managing hazardous waste. For the full procedures, see
Section 6, “Exhibits” (Tools & Forms).
It is important to first determine if work materials or waste is hazardous in order to apply the relevant procedures for managing hazardous waste. For more information, see Hazardous Waste:
Waste Determination and Characterization Guidelines
[pdf], and also Hazardous Waste:
SLAC Hazardous Waste Examples
[pdf].
Each individual, group, and department that generates hazardous waste is responsible for ensuring that all hazardous waste is properly managed by making certain that the waste is stored in appropriate containers and that the containers are properly labeled. For specifics, see Hazardous Waste:
Hazardous Waste Management Requirements
[pdf].
Areas (5.2.3.1)
Rules for storing hazardous waste and inspecting SWAAs, WAAs, and generic waste collection areas are in Hazardous Waste:
Hazardous Waste Collection Area Requirements
[pdf], and Hazardous Waste: Collection Area Weekly Inspection Checklist [word]
[pdf].
WAAs must be included in a facility emergency plan. An FEP template and current FEPs are available on the ES&H web site
(FEP
Index).
Segregation (5.2.3.2)
For general requirements, see Hazardous Waste:
Hazardous Waste Management Requirements
[pdf].
Many common and universal hazardous wastes generated at SLAC are recycled and must be managed according to specific requirements set forth in Hazardous Waste:
Requirements for Common Hazardous and Universal Waste
[pdf].
Industrial waste must be managed according to the requirements in Hazardous Waste:
Industrial Waste Requirements
[pdf].
(Also see Chapter 40, "Hazardous Materials", for chemical storage requirements as they relate to hazardous materials.)
On-site transportation of hazardous waste should be handled by WM. Request hazardous waste pickup on the same form used to request empty containers. (See
Hazardous Waste Pick-Up and Empty Container Request Form
[pdf] (instructions [pdf]).)
When necessary, generators may transport waste in accordance with the requirements in Hazardous Waste:
On-site Transportation Requirements
[pdf].
Authorization to treat hazardous waste involves numerous administrative and technical requirements. For an overview, see Hazardous Waste:
Hazardous Waste Treatment Requirements
[pdf].
