Why the Continuity of Knowledge Committee Was Formed:

A focal point topic for the SLAC Suggestion System in the Fall of 2002 was how to establish continuity of knowledge at SLAC when people leave the Laboratory. We got a few suggestions--some very good ones in fact--but decided to consider all of them at once along with other ideas that a working group, which we named the "Continuity of Knowledge Committee," could generate. The project was then blessed by Jonathan Dorfan and the Directorate.

Purpose of the Continuity of Knowledge Committee:

To ensure continuity of knowledge that impacts SLAC's scientific program, the committee will recommend to the SLAC Directorate a systematic method(s) of capturing and disseminating cultural, social, and technical information needed by the lab for its future productivity, efficiency and legacy. This information will come from SLAC employees--often long term employees, but not confined to them--who possess such knowledge. The system should be primarily directed toward identifying and obtaining this information before a person leaves our employment, but should be flexible enough to also obtain pertinent information from staff who have already departed.

Recommendations:

After studying the issue of continuity of knowledge, and consulting in-depth with a cross-section of employees throughout the lab, the Committee has made several recommendations for action. These recommendations were accepted by Jonathan Dorfan and the Directorate, and have been incorporated into this web site to allow maximum availability of the material to all SLAC staff.
