Construction on the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) began in the fall of 2006, and will be completed in 2009. The photos below offer a sampling of the construction; additional photos are available on the LCLS Web site image gallery and panorama gallery.

Dignitaries including local and national Congress members attended the LCLS groundbreaking ceremony in October of 2006.


Tunneling for the LCLS project was completed using a pair of roadheaders like the one pictured here.

Tunneling crews opened this second "adit," or entrance, to hasten mining operations and complete the X-ray Tunnel.

Inside the Beam Dump area. The black support girders will carry the beam pipe that angles the used electron beam into the beam dump, which safely absorbs the energy of the discarded electrons.
