The STAR Program is designed to:
  • Enable high school teachers to engage in cutting-edge scientific research to update their investigative skills, provide opportunities to collaborate with research scientists, use state of the art scientific instruments, and apply hands-on laboratory technology;
  • Allow teachers to identify their subject matter preference(s) and participate in authentic research projects with SLAC scientists for an eight week internship. SLAC will provide research opportunities in Astrophysics/Cosmology, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, or Physics.
  • Engage teachers in research four days per week and work on designing an investigative module for their course one day per week. The first week of the program consists of safety training, an introduction to specific content depending upon the nature of the research, an overview of the criteria for the investigative module, and team building activities. The last three days of the summer program,
  • Provide teachers will opportunities to share a poster session about their research and present their investigative modules to the group.
  • Conduct a follow-up session to be held on a weekend during the academic year.
Teachers selected for the internship receive:
  • Stipends
  • Travel Expenses
  • Free Housing on Stanford University campus

Roles & Responsibilities

Participants should expect to spend 40 hours per week in activities and/or research related to their programs while at the lab.

Teachers are responsible to
  • Attend the SLAC Research program for the specified time period.
  • Complete required deliverables specified by the program which may include: an electronic portfolio, research papers, poster presentations, pre-surveys, pre-tests, post-surveys, and post-tests.
  • Participate in all scheduled events including lectures, tours and group activities while at the lab.
  • Design and implement an investigative module.
  • Present the results of their work at appropriate professional conferences, such as NSTA or NCTM conferences.
Participants should expect to spend 40 hours per week in activities and/or research related to their programs while at the lab.
