International Shipping Information
Export Compliance
From the U.S. Dept. of Commerce website:
"Compliance with U.S. export controls and regulations is important to U.S. National Security, in order to protect U.S. interests at home and abroad. All companies must ensure their exports are conducted legally. Compliance not only involves controlled goods and technologies, it also involves restrictions on shipping to certain countries, companies, organizations, and/or individuals. It is critical that exporters adhere to the any and all export regulations, while contributing to U.S. National Security."
Return to Owner: Personal and Scientific Items
Sender calls FedEx at 1-800-463-3339. Select 0, then 0 to skip through the menu and speak to a Customer Service Representative.
FedEx can advise on the phone whether items can be sent to the home country and if the home institution account number can be used.
Sender discusses with FedEx with all pertinent info: city, country, details on what can and cannot be shipped, billing options.
Calling FedEx is a critical step — FedEx has up-to-date information on what can and cannot be shipped. This varies by country (e.g., no used clothing can be shipped to Mexico).
Sender prepares a commercial invoice and international shipper form, and brings package(s) to SLAC shipping.
Payment: Sender uses their personal credit card or cash to pay for the shipping (if a home institution FedEx account number is not available). They can get reimbursed at their home institution in their own currency.
U.S. Government Export Controls
The U.S. Departments of State, Commerce, Homeland Security, Treasury, Defense, and Energy each play a critical role in export control and nonproliferation activities both within the United States and outside its borders. At the link below you will find links to relevant information describing the activities and efforts each department (and subsequent bureaus within the departments) is conducting and making toward increased security.
