Training Programs

Apprenticeship Program

Inasmuch as minorities and women traditionally have been underutilized in trades and crafts positions, the Laboratory views apprenticeship positions as opportunities to take affirmative action in this area. The Laboratory creates new apprenticeship positions whenever budgetary constraints allow. An apprentice program is a four-year commitment for participants and consists of both on–the–job training and supplemental outside course work. Formal evaluations are conducted every six months to assure that participants are on schedule and doing well in the program. Upon completion of the apprenticeship program, employees are certified by the State of California. Since the inception of this program in 1968, 21 apprentices have graduated.

Internship Program

SLAC periodically identifies positions at the trainee level, which allow individuals an opportunity to receive on–the–job skills training. The training is individualized and is conducted by a supervisor in the work setting. These programs range in length from six months to two years and are primarily technical in nature.

Supervisory Training

The Diversity Office provides ongoing training for supervisors on EEO and AA, especially as it relates to specific employment actions or decisions. Some topics include: SLAC’s Diversity Program, The Interviewing Process, Disciplinary Actions, The Selection Process, Documentation and Employee Counseling.
The Human Resources Department conducts general programs on Supervisory Training. Campus Staff Development programs and workshops are also available.
