Career DevelopmentSLAC employees participate in a variety of programs available through the University, SLAC, and other educational sources. These programs provide opportunities for employees to increase their effectiveness in present assignments, in-crease skills and knowledge for individual growth, and provide possible stepping stones for career development. All employees have access to these programs. SLAC Staff Development ProgramsNew and varied developmental programs are being developed for laboratory employees, many in conjunction with the University Staff Development Office. The Ashley Career Development FellowshipThe Alonzo W. Ashley Career Development Fellowship was established in 1999 at the time of Al Ashley's retirement. All SLAC employees with a minimum of 3 years of service are invited to submit a proposal. Applications are generally available each year beginning in May. The deadline for submission of all applications is generally in July, to the Human Resources Department. The selected Fellow is typically an employee who has demonstrated they are committed to the notion of diversity and who would benefit greatly in their career at SLAC if given the opportunity to have a “paid” leave of absence from their regular duties. The employee will have one year to engage in activities that would enhance his/her career at SLAC and which would demonstrably con-tribute to the mission of the Laboratory. Many employees have used this opportunity to finish their education, pursue fields of study related to their careers, or to explore other job opportunities that ultimately would prove useful to SLAC. University ProgramsSLAC employees register for courses available through the campus Staff Development Office and the Honors Cooperative Program of the Graduate School of Engineering. Tuition Refund ProgramSLAC’s tuition refund program encourages staff to pursue higher educational opportunities to enhance job and career–oriented goals. |
